Sir Gavin Campbell 7th Earl of Breadalbane and Holland was the eldest son of Sir John Alexander Gavin Campbell. He was born on 9 April 1851 and went to St Andrews University.

He succeeded his father as the 7th Earl in 1871.

Breadalbane served as a lieutenant in the 4th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from 1873 to 1874. He was a Sub-Lieutenant in the Shropshire Yeomanry from 1877, being promoted lieutenant in 1882, retiring as captain in 1887. From 1897 to 1910 he was Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the Highland Cyclist Battalion and became Honorary Colonel in 1913.

He held several high positions in the Royal Household. He was a Lord-in-Waiting from 1873 to 1874, Treasurer of the Household 1880-5, Lord Steward of the Household 1892-5, ADC to the King and Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1893-1895.

He was created Baron Breadalbane in the peerage of the United Kingdom in 1873, and advanced to the Earldom of Ormelie and Marquessate of Breadalbane in 1885. He was also a Knight of the Garter and a Privy Councillor, and was Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland from 1907. 

He died 9 October 1922
