William Ewing was an initiate of the Lodge and was passed on 7 February 1861 in a rather busy meeting that reflected the early enthusiastic wave of members of the Regiment that joined the Lodge.also saw Sgt Wilcox passed, Sgt Thornberry raised, and Capt & Adjutant Abraham Trew and Dr Stewart the Regimental Assistant Surgeon initiated. The minutes do not record if Collins, the Founding Worshipful Master, conducted all the ceremonies.

Ewing was commissioned into the Regiment in 1860. He was promoted Captain in 1863.
