At one of the steering committee meetings prior to the Consecration, the Secretary James Burton proposed and Sir John Campbell seconded the motion to initiate Sergeant Samuel Wilcox as a Serving Brother to become the Lodge’s first Tyler.
He served as our Tyler until his death on 19 September 1877.
The Lodge supported the Wilcox family to the best of its ability in accordance with Regimental and Masonic tradition. The Lodge arranged for a full military funeral in 1877, and some forty years later the Lodge Secretary arranged the funeral of his widow and attended the funeral and laid a wreath and flowers on her coffin.
